Chemical compound is made up of atoms of different elements joined together by a chemical bond. The bonds are so strong that the compound acts as if it were a single substance. For example, Sodium sulfite which is a chemical compound prepared by reacting the solution with aqueous sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide. Every unit of sodium sulfite has two atoms of sodium, three atoms of oxygen and one atom of sulphur.

Importance of Sodium Sulphite and Ammonium Nitrate

Similarly, Solid ammonium nitrate is produced in the form of prills, granules or crystals. Ammonium nitrate is usually prepared by neutralizing dilute nitric acid with ammonium hydrate. Ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) was first prepared in the sixteenth century. Its early industrial development was primarily for use in explosives. However, about 1940 its use as a fertilizer developed rapidly.

Sodium Sulfite as Dechlorinating Agent

Sodium sulfite is widely used by utilities for dechlorination with the chemical formula Na2SO3. It is generally available in powder, crystalline, and tablet forms. It is a reducing agent and is reported to scavenge more oxygen than sodium thiosulfate. About eight parts of sodium sulfite are required to neutralize one part of oxygen. Sodium hydrogen sulfite is manufactured by reacting sulphur dioxide with sodium hydroxide or a sodium sulfite suspension. It is also produced as a by-product in the synthesis of sodium disulfite.

Excessive exposure to sodium sulfite may affect brain, respiratory system and skin. Sodium sulfite is used in the treatment of semi-chemical pulp in the paper industry, in the treatment of water, as a photographic developer, and in textile bleaching. Also used as an antiseptic, preservative, and antioxidant used in hair dyes.

Applications of Ammonium Nitrate

Ammonium nitrate is a chemical compound with the chemical formula NH4NO3. It is commonly used in agriculture as a high nitrogen fertilizer. Ammonium nitrate is a commodity product, without readily identifiable variations or grades. A standard solid fertilizer, Calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN, nitro chalk) is widely used as a versatile source of nitrogen.

Ammonia is an important source of different compounds that contain nitrogen. In the manufacturing of ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate, which are used as fertilizers, a huge amount of ammonia is used.
